  • HOW TO APPLY

I.1 On-Line Application

You can apply on line by visiting the Department WebPage (www.stt.msu.edu) which provides you the University Application Forms and the Department application materials. The on-line application fee is $50.

The forms included are as follows:

1. A form entitled "2008-2009 Domestic and International Application for Graduate Study" and (for international applicants) “2007-2008 International Student Supplemental Application." No special forms are needed in order to apply for financial support.

2. Three forms for letters of recommendation ( http://www.msu.edu/user/gradschl/ prospect/gradapprec.pdf ).

3. A form entitled "Application Supplement." (This is a list of math/statistics courses you have taken with grades)

4. A form entitled "Statement of Plans" in which you should state, in one page or less, your goals for graduate study at MSU.

5. Short Form Application (This is for US citizens only). If you wish a quick, informal evaluation of the likelihood that you would receive admission and/or an assistantship, send us the "Short Form Application".

I.2 Financial Aid for Applicants

The Department has approximately eight new assistantships available each year. In addition, fellowships are available to outstanding U.S. citizens. In almost all cases, in order to be offered assistantships international students must have a master's degree in either mathematics or statistics before they begin study at MSU.   All domestic applicants should have a good background/degree in mathematics and/or statistics in order to be considered for assistantships.

All hard copy application materials (graduate application, transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation, Application Supplement, and Statement of Plans) should be sent to the Department directly with the $50 application fee. In the case you submit your application online with the $50 fee, send all other application materials to the Department by mail together with a photocopy of your GRE scores and/or TOEFL scores. If possible, send the letters of recommendation in the same envelope with the other application materials. International students must have a minimum of 520 or 190 (computer based) on TOEFL for provisional admission to the University. For regular admission you need 550 (no subscores below 52) or 213 (no subscores below 19). TOEFL is required for all international students. Students may be required to study English on a full-time or part-time basis depending on their TOEFL scores.

It is to the advantage of those who wish to obtain an assistantship that your materials arrive in the Department by January 1, 2008 and certainly no later than March 1, 2008. Most decisions concerning assistantships will be made between February 1, 2008 and April 15, 2008. Later openings sometimes occur and late applications are always considered.

Minimum requirements for regular admission of applicants for whom English is a foreign language include an average TOEFL score of 550 or 214 (if computer) or above, with no subscores below 52 (or 19 for the computer exam). Only regularly admitted applicants will be considered for assistantships. It is therefore important that TOEFL scores be submitted early in the application process.

I.3 GRADUATE RECORD EXAMINATION

The Graduate Record Examination is very useful to us in evaluating applicants for assistantships. We prefer, but do not require (see Section IV, Graduate Assistantships) that all applicants take the GRE General Aptitude Examination. We also suggest that they take the GRE Subject Test, Advanced Mathematics. GRE's are given several times a year at major universities. Students wishing to take the exam can usually obtain registration forms at the college or university they attend or by writing to the Graduate Record Examinations Board, Princeton, New Jersey 08541 or by calling 609-921-9000, or by using the web site: http://www.ets.org/guidance.html.
